Signup for Our Flash Event Texts!

Don’t miss out on the fun—sign up for our Flash Event texts.  “Flash Events” are last minute events that require no planning, reservations, or responses and aren’t on the Santiva Islanders’ calendar. They’re just something fun to do and we want to invite the gang along. It’s like texting a friend on Friday to say something like— “Hey—we’re going for burgers and brews at the American Legion on Sunday from 1:00—2:30. Come join us. “

No response needed. Just show up, or not. So far we’ve been to the American Legion and Breezer’s Tiki Bar.

Obviously, we can’t text all of our members. Plus, some members aren’t great fans of texts. Therefore, we are starting out small. If you want to be included in the fun, please sign up here.

Note: These texts will come from “Santiva Islanders” and will not allow anyone to respond, so you won’t get a million pings from everyone on the text string responding. We don’ t need or want to know who’s coming, but you’ll know one of the Santiva Islander gang will be there to greet you when you show up—could be two folks or twenty, but for sure, it’ll be fun. You can opt out at anytime.

  • Tuesday, April 8, 2025—The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See

In this remote Yunnan village, the stranger finds the rare tea he has been seeking and a reticent Akha people. In her biggest seller, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, See introduced the Yao people to her readers. Here she shares the customs of another Chinese ethnic minority, the Akha, whose world will soon change. Li-yan, one of the few educated girls on her mountain, translates for the stranger and is among the first to reject the rules that have shaped her existence. When she has a baby outside of wedlock, rather than stand by tradition, she wraps her daughter in a blanket, with a tea cake hidden in her swaddling, and abandons her in the nearest city.

    • The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

    • Ruby Bridges Goes to School by Ruby Bridge

  • Tuesday, June 10, 2025—The In-Between: Unforgettable Encounters During Life’s Final Moments by Hadley Viahos

A hospice nurse writes a memoir about her experiences with 12 different patients at the end of life. Short stories, not depressing but faith strengthening.

Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die.

  • Tuesday, July 8, 2025—Table for Two by Amor Towles

“Superb ... This may be Towles’ best book yet. Each tale is as satisfying as a master chef’s main course, filled with drama, wit, erudition and, most of all, heart.” —Los Angeles Times. Millions of Amor Towles fans are in for a treat as he shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages.

  • Tuesday, August 12, 2025—The Book Spy by Alan Hlad

1942: With the war’s outcome hanging in the balance, President Roosevelt sends an unlikely new taskforce on a unique mission. They are librarians and microfilm specialists trained in espionage, working with a special branch of the Office of Strategic Services and deployed to neutral cities throughout Europe. By acquiring and scouring Axis newspapers, books, technical manuals, and periodicals, the librarians can gather information about troop location, weaponry, and military plans.
